Wandern: Zermatt

We're trying to squeeze in a few last hiking trips before we return home and we had to see the famous Matterhorn.

The schoggi selection was easy for this trip. Sure enough, that is what the Matterhorn looks like (except with more clouds in real life)....

Our hike took us past several lakes.

In this area most of the forests are European Larch.

We always enjoy riding a cog wheel train, too.

The Marinade Man

You never know who you might run into at the Bahnhof! I think this guy was trying to sell us some marinade mix....

Skiing in June

Wandern: return to Braunwald

We went back to Braunwald to hike the same hike that we enjoyed so much at the end of last summer. I do think that we all would vote this to be our favorite hike that we've done in Switzerland. This time around though, we hit some snow so steep and so deep that we had to go off the trail and way up the mountain. Luckily we were eventually able to reconnect with our trail. We were surprised to see Edelweiss blooming so early, but it was a mild winter this year.

Dinner on the train

Our Disentis hike took so long that we decided to have dinner in the restaurant car on the train ride home....

Wandern: Disentis

We recently hiked from the town of Disentis up to the mountain lake, Lag Serein--a steep hike of about a 900 meter altitude gain. Disentis is in the Graubünden canton of Switzerland, where people speak Romansch (instead of Swiss German, French, or Italian). There were Romansch sayings painted on lots of the houses. If you watch this ad for the region, you can hear the large mountain goat speaking Romansch while the little goat translates into Swiss German. One of the other perks of this hike had to do with our timing--the wild mountain strawberries are just ripening!
